Edward D Fuller was born in 1918 in Oklahoma. Raised in the Magdalena area, he attended NMAMC from 1938 to 1940. He then left school and moved to California to work for Consolidated Aircraft. In December 1941 he enlisted in the USAAF and was trained as a B-27 pilot. He was assigned to the 1st Antisubmarine Squadron Langley Field VA and in December 1942 was deployed to England where he and his crew were stationed at RAF St Eval. They were part of a new strategic effort to help combat the U Boats then patrolling the North Atlantic. In February 1944, the unit began a strategic round the clock offensive aimed to locate and kill U Boats surfacing to recharge their batteries in the Bay of Biscay. The B-24’s were equipped with a new experimental microwave RADAR system to help in locating their prey. Records at St Eval state that his plane failed to return from its mission on February 7, 1944. His body was never recovered and today he is memorialized at the Tablet of the Missing at the Cambridge American War Memorial and Cemetery. Newspaper clippings indicate that he was married to the former Dixie Cantrell of El Paso TX at the time of his death and that she was expecting their first child. Lt Edward D Fuller was 25 years of age at the time of his death.
