Marvin Perry Horton Jr. was born in New York City on February 10, 1918, the only child of Mr and Mrs MP Horton Sr. He was raised in Old Greenwich CN and graduated from Greenwich HS in 1936. In 1938 he found his way to NMAMC and enrolled in the College of A&S studying Bacteriology. He remained at NMAMC for three years, being known around the campus for wearing a cap that his grandfather wore during the Civil War. In March 1941 he enlisted in the US Navy and was accepted into its pilot training program. In April 1942 he was commissioned and earned his wings at Corpus Christi Naval Air Station. He remained there as a flight instructor and in July 1943 he married Mildred Richards of Corpus Christi. That same month, he was assigned to VT-18 which was just being established at Alameda NAS CA flying the Avenger TBF. The squadron was preparing for combat duty aboard the USS Intrepid as part of its next combat patrol in the Pacific. On October 21, 1943, while coming off a glide bombing run over Point Reyes CA, Lt jg Marvin Perry Horton’s plane struck a flock of sea gulls and crashed near Olema CA, a small community in Marin County. His body was recovered and returned to his parents for burial in Old Greenwich Cemetery. He was 25 years of age at the time of his death.
