Lieutenant Speegle James Wood
Speegle James Wood was born on 17 November 1913 to Mr. and Mrs. WL Wood. He was raised in Sweetwater TX and graduated from Sweetwater HS. After a brief stop at Eastern NM Junior College, Speegle came to NMAMC in the fall of 1936 and began a stay that would endear him to Aggies for his play on the football team for the next four years. Leaving NMAMC in 1940, Speegle soon found himself in the US Army and In February 1942 was at Fort Benning Georgia in the Officers Motor maintenance Couse as part of the Infantry School. He would shortly be assigned to the 36th Infantry Division and was preparing to be shipped overseas when on May 4, 1942 he was killed in a vehicle accident in which 4 enlisted troops were injured. He was buried in Sweetwater Cemetery. Lt Speegle James Wood was 28 years of age at the time of his death in service to his nation.
