Bronze Star

Thomas Raymond Edmondson was born February 27, 1921 to Mr. and Mrs TR Edmondson. After graduation from Fabens HS in Texas, he enrolled at NMAMC in the fall of 1939. He attended one year. In January of 1942, shortly after the outbreak of hostilities he entered the US Army at Ft Bliss TX. His training took him to Camp Roberts CA, Camp Hood TX, Camp Blanding FL, and Fort Meade MD. In July of 1944 he shipped to England and in October 1944 he was assigned to Company E, 47 Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division which was stationed in defensive posture outside Schevenhuette Germany, at that time the deepest penetration into German. On 20 October he took part in action for which he would be awarded the Bronze Star. On 16 November 1944 his unit spearheaded the attack on German defenses in what is today known as the Battle of the Huertgen Forest. The initial assault was on Gressenich Germany. During this opening battle, Sergeant Thomas R Edmondson died as a result of a penetrating shell fragment to his chest. He remains were buried at the American Military Cemetery in Henri Chappele Belgium where they remain today. He was 23 years of age at the time of his death.
